kurz mal wieder zwischendurch etwas auf Deutsch. Was ist passiert die letzten Wochen?

Ganz wichtig ist, dass ich meinen neuen Film für den fair-trade Filmwettbewerb 2011 fertig gestellt habe. Am 15.03.2011 gibt es das offizielle Ergebnis von der Jury. Ausgesetzt sind 10.000 Euro für den ersten Platz, also ein mega-mäßiges studentisches Taschengeld. Da 117 Film eingericht wurden, bin ich allerdings schon froh, wenn wir es in die Top 10 schaffen würden.

Für den Film haben wir uns (d.h. Joep, einem Holländer aus dem vierten Jahr International Communication und ich) zum ersten Mal zwei Models aus der Region hier besorgt. Es ging darum, die Marke „fairtrade“ möglichst originell für die Zuschauer in Szene zu setzen. Ich glaube, dass wir das ganz gut und sexy geschafft haben.

Sonst läuft Uni-mäßig alles gut im Moment, doch nimmt sie ziemlich viel Zeit ein, da ich neben dem normalen Programm noch im „honours-Programm“ drin bin und auch noch einen Niederländisch-Kurs einmal die Woche abends mache.

Apropos holländisch, gestern war ich mit 3 Kumpels in einer Bar, die einen Bierlift inne hatte. Wie geil ist das denn! Man sitzt oben eine Etage  über der Bar, ruft dem Barkeeper seine Bestellung runter und der schickt die Getränke per kleinem Holzaufzug nach oben. In der Bar beschlossen wir auch, nächste Woche mal beim Probetraining von den Spartan Fights, den Kickboxern mitzumachen. Ob ich danach noch alle Zähne drin habe, lasse ich euch wissen.

Okay, you may ask yourself what the Zwarte Piet is I guess. He and Sinterklaas are figures of the Dutch Christmas Culture. The Zwarte Piet climbs down roofs and distributes presents. Compared to the German culture, he may feature similarties to „Knecht Ruprecht“.

Kelly and I had this awesome customes, Kim and her mum put this black paint on our face, red lipstick (wuhuu^^) and two bags each, one with presents and one with pepernoten. (http://www.pancakemondays.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/pepernoten.jpg)

After we finished our dressing-up, Kims mum drove us to the buildings, where the actions should take place. After some hiding-time, we ran screaming and shouting into the gym hall and threw with pepernoten (I was told I had to do this )

The children asked me questions of course, and my Dutch is still not the best. I can understand nearly everything, but answering is another story. So Kelly had a great idea: I am the „studenten-Piet“, who can not speak dutch yet and kelly the „teacher-piet“. Because: Sinterklass and the black piet are coming from spain to holland every year. So it was a logical explanation that I could just speak Soanish and not Dutch yet. So I was walking around, telling everyone „hola, que tal?“ Oder einfach nur „Si si“

At the end the children also taught me some Dutch, it was really fun to learn a language from 4-6 year olds, you feel a bit stupid, but anyway, it was a great experience and I am glad that I have done this. Playing someone from a different culture, you don’t really know and you don’t really speak the language and ALSO in front of 20 children staring at you, might be not everyone’s taste

Finally we had done our task, drove back and made a short stop-over at Kim’s neighbour place, to visit the little boy you can see on the picture.

WATS- Image-Film (University-Video made in Media Skillz)

I just had a look at my latest blog-entry and I thought:“Damned, somehow it does not look good. It does not keep the spirit and shows how life is here in reality.“ This may have different reasons. First, I do not have that much time like I had in New Zealand. Of course I always compare this blog with the New Zealand one, which was a great success, though. Second, University life is different than travelling. So I think it is not worth to try to make something like a poor imitation (Abklatsch) of my New Zealand blog – this blog was a once-a-lifetime experience, is unique and stands for it’s own. Therefore I decided to change the blog style from now on. What does this mean? From now on, I am not going to tell you every 2 weeks or so what I have done or what I am doing. This is too much time-consuming for me and probably boring for you.

I am going to make a special „Juli-In-Holland“-Blog-Style, where I will tell you just the most funny stuff, awesome stuff we do in University, crazy stuff I do in private life. Not in chronological order any more, like from A to B. It’s more open, creative and fun than ever!

I hope you will join me and my life here in Holland/Groningen and I’m curious for all the adventures that are waiting, somewhere there outside.

Part 1_ The long search

Two and a half months. Looking for a room in Groningen. And no success. Awful.

The fact that not enough rooms for students exist is a serious yearly recurring problem.

If we take a close look at the German “StudiVZ”, we can find groups like “homeless in Groningen” or “I’d do everything for a room in Groningen”, where unlucky homeless students promises each other to stay together on a campsite if they can not find anything.

Shocked by the fact how hard it can be to find a room, even if you are on site,

I finally made it four days before my study started to find something.

12,3 square meters, not too expensive, very good location, just 5 minutes from the city centre and around 20 minutes from the Zernike centre, where the university is located.

Part 2_ The Keiweek

The Keiweek basically is a 5-day-party in Groningen, where 5000 students-to-be get to know the city, the party-locations and pubs, the sport facilities and of course get to know other international or national students. The following youtube link shows you perfectly how I experienced these 5 days:

We were split up into different groups of about 15 people with always two or more Keileaders, who were second year students and leading the group. I signed in for “Internationals”, but somehow, when I met my group, they were just Dutch students!

In the end it turned out to be very good to learn some Dutch and to get to know some locals. German students I would later meet in great numbers anyway.

I have never before been out for 5 days in a row without being to bed before 7.30 am….Dutch people really are party animals! The obvious result was having a cold and a running nose the following weekend.

First of all, my own academic English writing hopefully experiences an improvement. Due to the fact that my whole study is in English and I have to deal with texts and essays in any form anyway, writing in German in not necessary and also does not have a big relevance anymore.

Secondly you as my readers, of which I am very proud by the way, can improve their reading skills. Even if you do not understand every word, it might be a future investment to get used to English texts.
